What Really Matters?

There are times when we are posed with the question, "What really matters?" in the most powerful and poignant ways. The Fort McMurray Wildfire has shoved that question into all of our faces; and it's time to answer. Alberta is strong. And we don't know our strength by success, we know strength by how we face adversity, by how we respond to crisis, and by how we treat ourselves and others when things go bad. Our economy has been hammered and the impact of that doesn't feel like a "strengthening," it feels more like a beating. And even with the memory and impact of floods still fresh in our minds, we take another strike from the hammer. With fires raging so large and so hot that they are creating their own weather; with homes destroyed, families terrified, communities shattered, billions in damage, and thousands of hectares of our gorgeous province torched; we collectively receive another hit. And here we face the question: What really matters? The foundation of all good things is invariably an action that emanates from love. Love that shows up as care for a neighbour, relief that your home wasn't destroyed, love as a desire to help complete strangers, and a belief that we live in a country and province where others would do the same for you. We all do our part in our own ways. Real wealth includes social capital and acting on what you value. While you think about what really matters to you, we ask that you consider the many good methods of providing support to those who's lives are in a wildfire-induced turmoil.
